Frequently Asked Questions
Who should attend a VITL training?
Anyone who wants to learn violence intervention tools can attend a training. Our goal is to train ordinary people to diffuse or prevent conflicts without the need for a police presence.
If I attend the training, am I committing to being on the violence intervention team?
No. We believe that de-escalation training and alternatives to policing are important tools for anyone aligned with our mission to keep our community safe.
What if I do want to be on the violence intervention team?
Attending a VITL training is the first step. After the training, we will follow up with participants who want to be on the violence intervention team. We hold individual or small-group meetings to review your personal risk assessment, answer any questions you have, and otherwise ensure we are all aligned in our work.
Is there a cost for the training?
Trainings held in Greater Lafayette are free to attend.
Trainings requested by out-of-town groups may include a suggested donation (typically $5) to help defray travel costs, but nobody will be turned away.
